“Canada is concerned by the events unfolding in Chile in the aftermath of a 8.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred earlier today.

“The Government of Canada extends its sympathies to those affected by the earthquake. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people and Government of Chile as it responds to this emerging natural disaster.

“Canadian government officials are currently assessing the situation to clarify the extent of the damage in Chile as well as to assess the potential impact on Canadians who are present in the country.

“Canada stands ready to provide any necessary assistance to the Government of Chile during this time of need.

“Canadian officials are closely monitoring the potential implications of the tsunami warning that has been issued across the Pacific Ocean.

“We have been in contact with our embassies in those countries that may be affected by this tsunami alert.

“To date, we do not have confirmation of any Canadian citizens affected. We can report that at the time of the earthquake, 1,100 Canadians were registered in Chile and some 60 in Concepción.

“We will provide an update on the number of Canadians affected when available.

“Our officials in Santiago are contacting relevant Chilean authorities to clarify the extent of the damage, and to determine whether Canadian assistance may be required.

“The Government of Chile has not made a request for international assistance at this time.

“We invite Canadian citizens who are in the affected areas to call home and reassure their loved ones, if they have not been affected by this event.
